Biology 80S: Applied Research Technology
“Genetic Barcoding of Micronesian Fish and Invertebrates”
Come to this class if you want to DO science and participate on “One People One Reef” research from the pacific islands of Micronesia! The goal is to genetically identify fish collected by fishermen in Ulithi atoll, to investigate if these fish are new to science or have distinct populations, so we can inform Ulithians about the results and understand better the organisms that live there. We will also work with invertebrates, including sea cucumbers and corals.
What can you expect?
Schedule and requirements Spring 2018
Schedule Thursday evening 7-8:30 pm, and Friday 8 am-noon, rm. 627.
** 9A class is a highly reccomended requirement **
- Gain knowledge on molecular ecology and evolution. Learn how do scientists track evolutionary relationships using the DNA, by doing it yourself.
- You will learn about scientific applications and molecular ecology methods available today
- Get experience and feel more comfortable working in a genetics laboratory
- Develop teamwork skills and critical thinking
- Two thirds of the time will be spent doing lab work and one third analyzing and interpreting the data. We will include brief lectures and discuss together science related to this field.
